On 11 October 2025, Mr. Gilbert T.S. Chan, Former Director of Operations at the Independent Commission Against Corruption (ICAC) and Former Managing Director & Senior Counsel of Goldman Sachs Asia LLC, delievered a guest lecture titled "Financial Crime Risk and Compliance: The War Against Corruption" for students enrolled in the course LAW322 Risk and Compliance at the Department of Law and Business.

In this presentation, Mr. Chan drew on both the prosecutorial and defence sides of his remarkable 43-year career to offer a practitioner's perspective on corruption investigation and prevention. Drawing from his criminal law enforcement experience with the ICAC and his in-house regulatory role at the Wall Street investment banking giant Goldman Sachs, he shared vivid stories and detailed case experiences that illustrated how corruption risks are detected, investigated, and managed in both public and corporate sectors.

Through real-life examples, Mr. Chan discussed the practical challenges and ethical dilemmas faced by investigators, compliance officers, and legal professionals -- ranging from handling conflicting interests and maintaining professional integrity, to navigating the complexities of international financial regulations. His open and interactive style captivated the audience, helping students connect theoretical concepts with the realities of enforcement and compliance practice.

Students actively participated and communicated with Mr. Chan throughout the lecture and, during the Q&A session, raised thoughtful questions on topics such as financial crime risk management, corporate governance, and professional ethics. The session was both inspiring and enlightening, deepening students' understanding of the importance of integrity, transparency, and accountability in the financial and legal sectors. The insights gained from this lecture will also be highly valuable for students' future career prospects in law, compliance, and financial governance.
