Guest Lecture on ESG and the Evolving Role of Legal Professionals
On 16 April 2026, the Department of Law and Business hosted a guest lecture delivered by Prof Wong Kwai Huen Albert on the growing significance of Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) considerations in the legal profession. During the lecture, Prof Wong traced the development of ESG and explained how it has evolved into an important pillar of modern business, corporate governance, and regulatory practice. He emphasised that ESG now plays a critical role in evaluating corporate conduct, promoting sustainability, and shaping long-term business decision-making.
The lecture also highlighted the evolving role of legal professionals in the ESG context. Prof Wong explained that lawyers are increasingly expected to guide clients through complex ESG-related regulations, disclosure obligations, stakeholder expectations, compliance issues, and risk management concerns. His sharing enabled students to better understand how ESG considerations may arise across different areas of legal practice. In addition, Prof Wong outlined the changing global regulatory landscape, with particular focus on the increasing importance of mandatory disclosure requirements. He encouraged students to remain attentive to the dynamic development of ESG regulation and to reflect on the skills and professional awareness required for future legal practice.
During the Q&A session, students and department staff actively engaged with Prof Wong and raised questions on ESG practice, career development, and the future role of lawyers in this field. Prof Wong responded with insightful and practical advice, creating a lively and interactive atmosphere. The Department of Law and Business expresses its sincere appreciation to Prof Wong for his inspiring and informative lecture.
