On 19 September 2026, Prof. H.F. Leung acted as an invited Moderator by the Institute of International Experts (IIE) for the session “Expert Evidence in Adjudication under the Regime of Construction Industry Security of Payment Ordinance”, with 2 distinguished panelists, Ms. Vivian Wong, a Partner of Cocking and Co. LLP, Solicitors, and Sr. T.T. Cheung, Past President of the Hong Kong Institute of Surveyors and a very experienced expert witness, at the Annual Conference 2026 of IIE titled “Unite Experts Globally,” held at Hotel Alexandra, Hong Kong. The event attracted many attendees and provided an excellent opportunity for exchanges among expert witnesses with different areas of expertise.

On 28 July 2026, Prof. H.F. Leung delivered a CPD talk as an invited speaker by the Hong Kong Institute of Surveyors (HKIS) on the topic “Navigating Statutory Adjudication: Insights from UK and Singapore Cases for Hong Kong Surveyors”.

Prof. Leung examined the landmark court decisions from mature jurisdictions, such as the UK and Singapore, and analysed how statutory adjudication has been applied in resolving real-world property, real estate, and construction disputes.

On 22 July 2026, the Department of Law and Business organised a study trip to Macao, attended by eight students and five staff members. The delegation first visited the Faculty of Law at the Macau University of Science and Technology. The visit featured a panel discussion and academic exchange, followed by a tour of the University History Museum.

The Department of Law and Business of Hong Kong Shue Yan University (HKSYU), in collaboration with the Financial Dispute Resolution Centre (FDRC), successfully co-organised “Young Mediators in Practice: Building Dialogue, Resolving Conflict – Mediation Workshop for Youth 2026” on 16 May 2026 at HKSYU.

The workshop formed part of the HKSYU 55th Anniversary: Community Service Project Series, which highlights how academic knowledge can respond to real-world needs and create meaningful community impact. Designed to introduce mediation as a practical life skill, the workshop brought together senior-form students from six secondary schools for a full-day experiential learning programme on mediation, communication, and constructive conflict resolution. Through the workshop, participants explored how dialogue, active listening, neutrality, and mutual understanding can help resolve conflict constructively in both legal and everyday contexts.

The Department of Law and Business hosted a guest lecture on 22 April 2026 on the recognition and enforcement of foreign judgments and arbitral awards. The session was delivered by Mr. Alan Li, Senior Partner at Jincheng Tongda & Neal Law Firm, Shenzhen Office, and Ms. Celine Cen, Associate at the same firm. It provided students with valuable insights into cross-border dispute resolution and the legal frameworks governing the recognition and enforcement of foreign judgments and arbitral awards, particularly within the context of China.

On 16 April 2026, the Department of Law and Business hosted a guest lecture delivered by Prof Wong Kwai Huen Albert on the growing significance of Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) considerations in the legal profession. During the lecture, Prof Wong traced the development of ESG and explained how it has evolved into an important pillar of modern business, corporate governance, and regulatory practice. He emphasised that ESG now plays a critical role in evaluating corporate conduct, promoting sustainability, and shaping long-term business decision-making.

The Department of Law and Business organised an alumni talk on 27 March 2026, from 17:45 to 19:00, in RLB 502. The event featured three alumni speakers: Ms. Aimee Cheng, a solicitor and 2016 graduate; Mr. Christopher H. Redfield, Court Liaison Officer in the Duty Lawyer Service and a 2023 graduate; and Mr. Jonathan Lee, a 2025 graduate currently studying in the Juris Doctor programme at The Chinese University of Hong Kong.

On February 27, 2026, the Department of Law and Business organized a study trip to a grassroots court in Shenzhen and the Shenzhen Court of International Arbitration. Students received a historical review of the court, its functions, and judicial reform. There was a meaningful exchange of knowledge, particularly regarding the court’s case management.

Four of our students formed a team to participate in the Youth Rule of Law Development Summit (“青年法治建設高峰會”) 2025-26. The Summit includes workshops on Hong Kong’s constitutional order and the National Security Law, as well as a visit to the Department of Justice. The team also wrote an essay on reconciling cross‑border legal issues under the Chinese Constitution and the Basic Law. They presented their paper on 14 February 2026.

On 2 December 2025, the Department of Law and Business at Hong Kong Shue Yan University had the pleasure of welcoming representatives from the Financial Dispute Resolution Centre (FDRC) to deliver a guest lecture for students of the course LAW314 Commercial Dispute Resolution.

On 1 December 2025, students enrolled in the course LAW 322 Risk and Compliance visited Manulife Tower in Kwun Tong for a company visit held from 3:00 pm to 5:00 pm. The event provided an important opportunity for students to connect their academic study of risk and compliance with real-world practices in the insurance industry. The programme included guided discussions and networking rotations that introduced students to how a major insurance company manages regulatory obligations, operational risks, and corporate governance structures.

On 15 November 2025, the University hosted its annual Info Day for prospective students and guests to explore academic programmes across faculties. The Department of Law and Business took part in the event with a series of interactive and experiential activities that drew strong interest from visitors.

Ms. Ellen Suen, Senior Manager (Qualifications & Assessments) at HKCGI, delivered a lively and inspiring career talk introducing students to the diverse opportunities in the profession of governance. She highlighted HKCGI’s global presence through the Chartered Governance Institute (CGI), the advantages of dual membership and dual qualification, and the wide-ranging career paths spanning corporate governance, compliance, ESG reporting, company secretarial practice, and investor relations.

The President’s List Ceremony for the Academic Year 2024–2025 was held on 7 November 2025 (Friday) at 4:30 pm in RLG208, Jockey Club Multimedia Production Centre, Research Complex.

The ceremony recognised outstanding academic achievement among undergraduate students across the University. Prof. Leung Hing-fung, Head of the Department of Law and Business, attended the ceremony and presented certificates to the awardees.

On 4 November 2025, representatives from the Construction Professional Mediation Group (“CMPG”) (formerly Construction Mediation Division (“CMD”)) of the Hong Kong Mediation Council (“HKMC”) were invited to deliver a guest demonstration session for Year 3 students of the Department of Law and Business at Hong Kong Shue Yan University, in the course LAW314 Commercial Dispute Resolution. The session, kindly arranged by the Department Head, Professor H.F. Leung, provided students with a rare and valuable opportunity to learn directly from leading mediation professionals and to observe first-hand how mediation operates in practice.

On 28 October 2025, Year 3 students from the Department of Law and Business at Hong Kong Shue Yan University, of the course LAW314 Commercial Dispute Resolution, visited the Hong Kong International Arbitration Centre (HKIAC). The outing offered a valuable opportunity to bridge classroom learning with real-world ADR practice in Hong Kong.

This year, we arranged two visits to the Court of Final Appeal for our Year 1 and exchange students. On 20th and 27th October 2025, two groups of our students had the enriching opportunity to visit different areas of the Court of Final Appeal. Some of these areas are not open to the public, which allowed our students to gain first-hand insights into the operation of Hong Kong’s highest court and deepen their understanding of judicial independence.

On 16 November 2024, our University hosted the Info Day for prospective students and guests to explore our academic programmes. Our Department also participated in it. We held a booth at the Mrs Dorothy Koo and Dr Ti Hua Koo Plaza, which attracted many guests with interactive games designed to introduce legal concepts in a fun and engaging way. Furthermore, we organised a mooting competition and demonstration in the Department’s Moot Court, offering our visitors an authentic experience of legal advocacy and courtroom procedures. Both activities were well received, providing valuable insights into the study of law and business and the diverse learning experience offered by our Department.

We invited a speaker from the Independent Commission Against Corruption, Ms. Suki CHAN, to give our Year 4 students a talk on the Prevention of Bribery Ordinance. Through this talk, students are better equipped to begin their post-graduate life.

On 18 November 2023, our University organised the Information Day 2023. Department of Law and Business had prepared two activities to welcome visitors and prospective students. First, we had an information booth, which was set up at the Lady Lily Shaw Hall 35th Anniversary Plaza. We had prepared some simple law-related questions to interact with our guests. Second, we opened up the moot court on that day. Not only did we introduce to our prospective students the moot court as an important learning resource of our Department, but we also used the moot court to briefly introduce to our visitors the court system in Hong Kong. It was a highly enjoyable day for both our teachers and student helpers. We hope to see you all again next year.
