Hong Kong Schools Mooting and Mock Trial Competition 2020–21
The preliminaries of the Hong Kong Schools Mooting and Mock Trial Competition 2020-21 (“Competition”) were held on 21 and 28 November 2020 respectively with great successes for all at the Hong Kong Federation of Youth Groups Institute for Leadership Development (the former Fanling Magistracy). Congratulations to the teams for advancing to the quarter-finals.
The Hong Kong Schools Mooting and Mock Trial Association (“Association”) organizes the Competition every year, and the Department of Law and Business of Hong Kong Shue Yan University (“HKSYU L&B”) started to collaborate with the Association in 2019. The Competition aims to provide local secondary school students with an opportunity to be involved in mooting and mock trial competitions, allowing them to understand how justice is administered in Hong Kong. It consists of preliminaries, quarter-finals, semi-finals, and finals. In the preliminaries, students from participating schools had the opportunity to experience the whole trial process. They played different roles, such as the prosecution and the defense, and called witnesses on their behalf or cross-examined witnesses of their opponents. During the mock trial, teams showed not only good preparation but also many individual students stayed calm and performed well. It is impressive to see what they have achieved in just two days.
We would also like to express our gratitude, in addition to the student helpers from L&B, to the tutors who were responsible for coaching secondary school teams. They were law students from the Faculty of Law of CUHK, the Faculty of Law of HKU, the School of Law of HK CityU and the Faculty of Law of Oxford University respectively. All of them have made a tremendous contribution to the success of the preliminaries.
We look forward to the next round of the Competition. The semi-finals and finals will hopefully be held on the HKSYU campus if the coronavirus pandemic improves. Will post you all posted.
