Young Mediators in Practice: HKSYU Department of Law and Business and FDRC Co-organise Mediation Workshop for Youth 2026
The Department of Law and Business of Hong Kong Shue Yan University (HKSYU), in collaboration with the Financial Dispute Resolution Centre (FDRC), successfully co-organised "Youth Mediators in Practice: Building Dialogue, Resolving Conflict -- Mediation Workshop for Youth 2026" on 16 May 2026 at HKSYU.
The workshop formed part of the HKSYU 55th Anniversary Community Service Project Series, which highlights how academic knowledge can respond to real-world needs and create meaningful community impact. Designed to introduce mediation as a practical life skill, the workshop brought together senior-form students from six secondary schools for a full-day experiential learning programme on mediation, communication, and constructive conflict resolution. Through the workshop, participants explored how dialogue, active listening, neutrality, and mutual understanding can help resolve conflict constructively in both legal and everyday contexts.
In the morning session, Mr. Peter Ma, a very experienced FDRC Mediator, delivered an insightful and highly engaging lecture, accompanied by professional demonstrations. Through clear explanations, practical examples, and interactive guidance, Mr. Ma introduced students to the fundamental concepts, process, and skills of mediation. The session provided participants with a valuable foundation for understanding the role of mediators and the importance of effective communication in dispute resolution.
In the afternoon, students took part in mediation role-play sessions, where they had the opportunity to apply the skills learned during the morning session in simulated dispute scenarios. FDRC Mediators, together with Prof. Leung Hing Fung, Head of the Department of Law and Business, served as judges during the role-play sessions. They provided students with professional guidance, constructive feedback, and practical insights into the skills and mindset required in mediation practice, helping students refelect on their performance and deepen their understanding of mediation.
The workshop concluded with an award presentation recognising students' effort, engagement, and outstanding performance in the mediation role-play sessions. More than a competition, the event encouraged young participants to see mediation as a meaningful tool for everyday life -- one that fosters dialogue, mutual understanding, and harmony within the wider community.
The Department of Law and Business extends its sincere appreciation to FDRC for co-organising this meaningful event and for its strong support in promoting mediation eudcation among young people. The Department also expresses heartfelt thanks to Mr. Peter Ma and all participating FDRC Mediators for their professional contributions, as well as to all participating secondary schools, teachers, and students for their enthusiasm and active engagement throughout the workshop.
Special thanks are also extended to our dedicated team of student helpers from the Department of Law an Business. Their responsible, enthusiastic, and attentive support contributed significantly to the smooth running of the workshop.
Through this workshop, students gained early exposure to mediation and develped a deeper appreciation of alternative dispute resoultion as a constructive and practical measns of addressing conflict. The event also reflected the Department's commitment to leagal education, community engagement, and the promotion of dialogue, empathy, and problem-solving skills among the younger generation, in line with HKSYU's broader mission of nurturing well-rounded individuals who are equipped to meet evolving societal needs.
