Guest Mediation Demonstration by the HKMC Construction Professional Mediation Group
On 4 November 2025, representatives from the Construction Professional Mediation Group (“CMPG”) (formerly Construction Mediation Division (“CMD”)) of the Hong Kong Mediation Council (“HKMC”) were invited to deliver a guest demonstration session for Year 3 students of the Department of Law and Business at Hong Kong Shue Yan University, in the course LAW314 Commercial Dispute Resolution. The session, kindly arranged by the Department Head, Professor H.F. Leung, provided students with a rare and valuable opportunity to learn directly from leading mediation professionals and to observe first-hand how mediation operates in practice.
The session was led by an esteemed panel of mediation experts, including Ms. Genevieve Lam (Chairperson of CPMG), Ms. Vivian Wong (Vice-Chairperson of CPMG), Mr. T.T. Cheung (Past Chairman of CMD), Professor H.F. Leung (Past Chairman of CMD), Mr. Nelson Lai (Past Chairman of CMD), Mr. Wilson Lam (Committee Member of CPMG), Mr. Paul Chan (Committee Member of CPMG), and Mr. Antony Man (Committee Member of CPMG). Ms. Lam and Ms. Wong opened the session with an insightful presentation introducing the concept and practice of mediation, the role of HKMC, and the work of the CPMG/CMD.
A highlight of the session was the live mediation role-play demonstration, vividly illustrating how a real mediation session unfolds. The mediation was conducted by Mr. T.T. Cheung as mediator, with Mr. Wilson Lam and Mr. Nelson Lai role-playing the disputing parties, and Professor Leung serving as the narrator. This dynamic and interactive demonstration captivated the students’ attention and provided them with a realistic understanding of mediation procedures, negotiation dynamics, and mediator techniques in practice.
The students found the session both highly engaging and intellectually enriching, gaining valuable first-hand insights into mediation skills and professional conduct that they will apply in their own role-play exercises later in the course.
At the close of the event, Professor Leung presented souvenirs and certificates of appreciation to the team, expressing the Department’s sincere gratitude for their generous contribution and support. The Department of Law and Business extends its heartfelt thanks to the CPMG and the HKMC for providing our students with such a meaningful and inspiring learning experience.
